Chuck Grassley votes against democracy by rejecting the restoration of habeas

Iowans, I need your help.

This morning, the US Senate rejected the Dodd-Leahy-Specter Amendment which would have restored habeas corpus by a vote of 56-43, four votes short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a potential Republican filibuster.

You can see the full roll call of the vote here.

I need you to call into Sen. Grassley’s state and local offices expressing your disgust and demanding an answer for Grassley’s vote.

Restore habeas corpus!

Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut gave what many consider to be a barn-burner of a speech on Sunday at the 30th Annual Harkin Steak Fry, and from my seat close to the stage on the press riser I’d have to agree. One of the most riveting moments was when Sen. Dodd called for the restoration of habeas corpus. You can watch the video of his speech at the bottom of this post, but we’ve got one more pressing issue right now.

We’ve got to restore habeas corpus, and Sen. Dodd and Sen. Patrick Leahy are taking the charge at Restore-Habeas.org. Matt Browner-Hamlin has got the lowdown on the effort here at Bleeding Heartland, with video from Sen. Dodd.

They’ve got the contact information for all 100 US Senators. We need 60 votes to overcome the GOP filibuster and right now we’re at 51 votes, so we need your help.

If you’re an Iowan, make sure to put the pressure on Sen. Chuck Grassley. He’s indicated he’s a ‘Maybe’ vote but that isn’t good enough. Iowans need to make sure that one of our most fundamental and core democratic principles in this nation is restored.

Contact Grassley at (202) 224-3744 and fill out this form to report his answer. Then come back here or to BH and tell us what Grassley (or his office) told you.

And here’s the video I promised:

“No more fallen angels”

I’ll try and post more thoughts on the Harkin Steak Fry as we go through the day. But first let me start off with a candidate who I’ve criticized before quite often: Senator Joe Biden of Delaware.

Biden gave the last speech of the day at the Steak Fry, a somber one about the realities of the war in Iraq and the way the issue dominates our policy in America and limits our ability to make progress in other areas. Just as Biden began to speak, clouds came in and covered the sun seemingly as if called on by Biden to show the seriousness with which he spoke.

You can click here to go to JoeBiden.com and read the full text of his remarks as prepared. However, there is one section I want to highlight to you:
“You know – in Iraq – the military refers to those who’ve been killed in action – as fallen angels.

How many more angels must fall – before this war ends?”
When my brother gets to Iraq, I will pray that he will not become a fallen angel every day until he returns home safely.

And you can watch the video of Biden’s speech below. The bit about “fallen angels” comes in at about 4:40.

Support the Troops, End the War

This will likely be my only post today as I’m taking some personal time to reflect today. I’ll add some of my thoughts and wrap-up reporting about the Harkin Steak Fry tomorrow.

Why am I reflecting today?

Because my brother, a reservist in the United States Marine Corps, left for active duty today. He and about 150 other Marines of the Echo Company left Camp Dodge around 9 AM this morning. They’re headed for three months of intensive desert training in California before heading to Iraq for a seven to eight month tour of duty.

But my brother wasn’t going alone. He will be heading to California and Iraq with four high school buddies while another friend is already an active duty Marine in California. They were profiled today on the front page of the Des Moines Register.

May God be with them.

I support the troops and that’s why I want to end this war; we must bring them home safely and as soon as possible. We must start today.

Live from the 30th Harkin Steak Fry

Sorry there isn’t video live on TomHarkin.com. Looks like uStream.tv had some technical difficulties which makes hosting a live webcast from a field in rural Iowa a bit tough.

Check out IowaIndependent.com for more coverage and some video.

Clark endorses Clinton

Lately, I haven’t been hearing as many folks on the netroots or out here in the real world calling for Retired General Wes Clark to get into the 2008 race. There were a lot of calls back in mid-to-late 2006 but Clark’s campaign apparatus and PAC never really took the steps and many folks had been wondering what the wait was.

Evidently, the wait was because he was looking to pick his own candidate to support. And in another blatant attempt to garner favor among the netroots (who love General Clark), the Clinton Campaign held a conference call this morning announcing with Clark where he announced his endorsement of Clinton’s campaign. Matt Yglesias has more here.

“No timeline, no funding. No excuses.”

Tracy Russo posted over at Bleeding Heartland last night with the video of Sen. John Edwards two-minute response to President Bush’s address to the nation last night. Go watch the video — it is the kind of thing all of the candidates should be doing, if they can afford it. Buying two minutes of straight advertising time during The Countdown with Keith Olbermann can’t be cheap (especially as Olbermann’s ratings keep going up and up).

As for Bush’s speech itself, I couldn’t stand to watch it and didn’t want to watch it. I had a member of the traditional media call me last night to ask if I knew of any groups that would be watching the speech and if they would be worthwhile to talk to afterward for reaction. I told them “hell no” and evidently that was the reaction they’d been getting most of the night.

Maybe the better story for them would’ve been the fact that no one gave a shit about last night’s rehash of the same failed policy over and over again, oh, and with plenty of lies.

Bill Belichick = George W. Bush

I have to admit, when I saw this email subject header from Tom Reynolds at the Richardson for President campaign I was a bit worried that Richardson was about to make another flub about which Northeastern sports team he liked over another (which he used to say he was a fan of):

“Richardson Statement on New England Patriots Spying Incident”

But instead he tried to make a joke:

“SPENCER, IA– Democratic Presidential candidate Governor Bill Richardson, campaigning today in Iowa, issued the following statement regarding the recent “spying” incident involving the National Football League’s New England Patriots:

“The President has been allowed to spy on Americans without a warrant, and our U.S. Senate is letting it continue. You know something is wrong when the New England Patriots face stiffer penalties for spying on innocent Americans than Dick Cheney and George Bush.”"

Heh.

I giggled. I guess this is one way to get those Democratic-leaning football fans on his side. And moving away from his baseball conundrums and focusing on a new sport that Americans love can’t be a bad idea for him.

This is how it happened

An enterprising reader sent me an email this morning offering his explanation as to Sen. Joe Biden’s ability to rack up the endorsement of every member of the Iowa House Democratic leadership. And it makes sense. In short:

“Hillary, Edwards, and Obama all had PACs but did not focus on candidates or “Funds” for State Legislatures. They focused on members of Congress. Richardson has no PAC.

Perhaps with the fact that Biden was in Iowa last year campaigning for Iowa Democrats not just Federal Candidates but also Legislative candidates.

Could you say that Biden has cultivated relationships with the House Leadership for a long time?”

The reader went through OpenSecrets.org and provided a nice detailed listing of how Biden’s Unite Our States PAC donated several thousand dollars to Iowa House Democrats and their fund. Here are a few of the details:

House Truman Fund, Des Moines, IA $15,000 9/19/2006 Contribution
Senate Majority Fund (IA), Des Moines, IA $15,000 9/19/2006 Contribution
Senate Majority Fund (IA), Des Moines, IA $10,000 10/26/2006 Contribution
House Truman Fund, Des Moines, IA $9,000 10/26/2006 Contribution
People for Beall, Fort Dodge, IA $1,000 10/31/2006 Contribution
Committee to Elect Moritz, Davenport, IA $500 9/19/2006 Contribution
Dorris Kelly for Iowa House, Waterloo, IA $500 10/18/2006 Contribution
John Whitaker for House, Hillsboro, IA $500 10/18/2006 Contribution
Nathan Reichert for House, Muscatine, IA $500 10/18/2006 Contribution

Of the $88,000 that Biden gave to Democrats in Iowa, some $49,000 went to Democrats in the Iowa legislature. Only $3000 went to candidates directly. The $49,000 that Biden gave to the overall legislative funds let the leadership pick and choose which candidates to give that money to in hopes of building their majority–and they succeeded. The reader also offered this somewhat cynical comment after detailing the money:

“If you notice Whitaker and Kelley have already endorsed Biden. Is Sen. Beall and Rep. Reichert next?”

I suppose that might a logical conclusion, but the $500 might be pretty meager in the grand scheme of things. Whitaker raised $37,740 total. Biden’s $500 represents about 1.3% of his total raised. Kelley raised $260,326 so Biden’s $500 is even less important at .19% of her total. Sen. Beall raised $162,658, again making Biden’s $500 pretty meager. Finally, Reichert raised $208,228 which also makes Biden’s small contribution meager at best. Nothing that would make me feel “indebted” enough to endorse him.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd did something similar, which the enterprising reader also documented.

Iowa House Truman Fund, Des Moines, IA $5,000 9/8/2006 Non Federal Contribution
Iowa House Truman Fund, Des Moines, IA $5,000 10/23/2006 Nonfederal Contribution
Iowa Senate Majority Fund, Des Moines, IA $5,000 9/8/2006 Non Federal Contribution
Iowa Senate Majority Fund, Des Moines, IA $5,000 10/23/2006 Nonfederal Contribution

The only other non-federal account or candidate Dodd gave money to was John Mauro’s campaign for Polk County Supervisor and Denise O’Brien’s run for Secretary of Agriculture. Oh, and I guess he gave some $50k to the IDP for the voter file (which is actually VAN access, as the voter file is picked up at the Secretary of State’s office).

Now, to my knowledge, Dodd has only picked up one legislature endorsement and that was Senate President Pro-Tem Jeff Danielson, who himself is a firefighter and Dodd did receive the endorsement of the International Association of Fire Firefighters and the Iowa Fire Fighters making that less surprising.

I would surmise from this data that while making contributions to the state level from leadership and other types of PACs may be beneficial but it still doesn’t mean (or guarantee) that you’ll lock up endorsements from state legislators or other candidates. Look at the amount of support that Hillary Clinton already has from state legislators and the reader even indicates that she didn’t campaign for or give cash to them in their 2006 efforts. Props to candidates who did come into Iowa and campaign for our state reps. and other officials, and even those who financially supported their efforts.

But it seems clear that Biden isn’t necessarily just cynically “buying” endorsements from state legislators but proving he’s committed to a Democratic majority in Iowa and other states, even if he does get some kind of incentive type of effect through their support in the caucuses.

And it is important to remember that legislator endorsements don’t necessarily translate to winning, so Biden’s got a lot more work ahead of him.

How did this happen?

I’m sure I’ll have my own thoughts on this later but I’m curious for your thoughts on this question:

How did Sen. Joe Biden manage to lock up the support of the entire Iowa House Democratic leadership?

I’m serious. Of all the candidates with momentum and support in Iowa, particularly among ordinary Iowans, how did this happen? And don’t just say it is the Iraq plan. I’m thinking Biden’s got to be making big promises or saying something awfully interesting things behind the scenes.

Last Chance to Buy Harkin Steak Fry Tickets Online!

Tomorrow night at midnight you will no longer be able to buy tickets to Sunday’s Harkin Steak Fry via TomHarkin.com, so you’ll have to purchase them at the gates for the price of $35. If you still want to purchase them online go HERE stat and pick up your tickets to one of the premier candidate events in Iowa, with the opportunity to get some good grub.

And if you can’t make it to the event, make sure to tune into the live webstream here on TomHarkin.com. I’ll be your host and you have a chance to submit your questions and have me ask them directly to Senator Harkin.

Excuses

Ok, no excuses about my absence. Getting back into the hang of things academically has been a burden the past few weeks as classes have commenced, fraternity recruitment has begun, etc. Still, I should’ve found time to post.

However, since I’ll be hosting the online coverage of the 2007 Harkin Steak Fry this Sunday in Indianola, I figure it is about damn time things start up regularly here again.

More to come.
